Hooks Used In Bass Fishing

There are many different styles and sizes of hooks used in bass fishing. Let's cover some of the most common types and sizes frequently used.

Plastic worm fishing hooks usually have a wide gap to enable hook penetration when a wad of plastic is in the fish's mouth. The first illustration is an offset wide gap worm hook. Depending on the size and thickness of the plastic worm or creature bait hook sizes between 2/0 and 5/0 are normally used.

The next hook illustrated is a straight shank worm hook. They come in standard gap and wide gap. The wide gap is preferred for plastic bait applications.

For drop shot fishing a much smaller hook is preferred. Typically a drop shot hook (illustrated) will be between a size 4 and up to a size 1/0. Hook sizes go from 4,2,1,1/0 (smallest to largest).

The next hook shown is a weedless drop shot hook. The weed guard can be light wire or heavy monofilament. This hook can also be used for wacky style worm fishing (where the hook is placed in the center of the worm).

This type of hook is used for flipping. Note the barbs on the hook shaft which helps keep the bait in place when punching through heavy grass.

This is a circle hook. Mostly used for live bait fishing but also be used for drop shotting or wacky rigging. Circle hook require a pressure type hook set as opposed to a strong powerful hook set. They tend to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth so releasing safely is easier.

This is a trailer hook. Trailer hooks are designed to be place on to the main hook and hang off the bend. As such they have a large eye to accommodate the size of the hook point and barb. Note the small tubing that comes with the hook. This is used to hold the hook in place on the main hook by cutting a small section and placing it on the main hook once the trailer hook is in place.
