Drop Shots

Drop Shot

The  drop shot is a very versatile rig for catching bass under many conditions. A drop shot is designed to keep the bait off the bottom where most bass like to feed.

A drop shot rig is made up of a small hook, usually in the range of #1 or #2 all the way up to a 2/0 size. The hook is tied anywhere from a few inches up to a couple of feet from the end of the line. Use a polymer knot to attach the hook.

A weight is attached to the bottom of the line. Special drop shot weights are designed for easy attachment. The other benefit of using a drop shot weight is that if you get hung up you can usually pull the weight off the line and save the rest of the rig. This saves time re-rigging and the cost of the hook.

Leader length (distance between the hook and the sinker) can vary greatly. Some fisherman always use a 6 inch leader for all conditions and swear by it. Others vary the leader length depending on water clarity and weed height.

The videos below explain the exact way to set up the rig, the kinds of baits to use, leader length and hooking options as well as how to fish it.
