Casting Jigs
Casting Jigs

Jigs have been one of the oldest forms of fishing lures for almost all species of both freshwater and saltwater fish. The standard casting jig was the first type of jig used to catch smallmouth and largemouth bass.

These lures can be deadly under some conditions to catch the largest bass in the lake. I believe more trophy bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure.

Fishing casting jigs take patience though. Typically they are cast to a piece of cover or structure and worked slowly over the bottom. The fisherman feeling his way with a slow methodical drag or hop and pause. Trying to detect the lightest strike or pickup.

The exception to this is the swing head casting jig. With this bait, the jig head is separated from the hook with a hinge. This allows the trailer to move about side to side and up and down creating a lot of action. Normally this rig is fished must faster than a typical casting jig and allowed to bounce steadily off the bottom.
