Medium Diving Crankbaits

Medium Diving Crankbaits are usually thrown when targeting bass in 6-12 foot depth range. As this is a key depth zone, medium divers can be used year round, depending on conditions.

Most medium diving crankbaits will range in size from just over two inches to about three and half inches in length. Some will have square bills and others longer, rounded bills. They usually range from 3/8 of an ounce to 5/8 of an ounce.

Round billed medium divers will usually go deeper than the square bills. I like to use the larger, round bills when I am looking to run in the deeper ranges. Remember, anytime that you are fishing with a crankbait you will get far more hits when the lure is ‘grinding’ the bottom or deflecting of wood, rocks, docks, etc.

Colors: As with any other baits if what you are using is not getting action, try  switching to a different color bait. Remember, as a general rule, use natural colors when the water is clear and bright colors when it is stained or murky. If you know the kind of forage fish that live in the lake or river you are fishing, try to match the size and color of your baits to look like what the bass are regularly feeding on.

Equipment: Medium divers should usually be thrown on baitcasting equipment unless you are throwing a smaller medium diving bait. Even then, you will have much better feel and control with baitcasting equipment. Line size can vary anywhere from 10 to as much as 20 pound test on monofilament or fluorocarbon lines. Don’t forget that the smaller the diameter of the line the deeper the bait will dive. If you are just starting out and only have one baitcaster, I would suggest using either 12 or 14 pound line.
